Recap: ICEMEN TOP C-LEVEL BOMBERS

The Icemen continued their dominance over the non-Loyola assisted Bombers with a 7-4 victory to open the 2010 summer season. Paul “Dazzle” Sampson started the season in his usual spot atop the Icemen stats page with a 4-point night (2G,2A) in the win.

After taking almost half the game to shake off the rust from the off-season and get their legs back, the Icemen spotted the Bombers a 2-0 lead before “winger” Sal Crupi got the Icemen on the board with an unassisted goal. “As our worst defensemen, it was a no-brainer moving Sal to the same position as Jeff Smith”, said new Icemen linemaker Brian McElwain.

With the floodgates now open, the Icemen would catapult to a 4-2 lead on two goals from Tim Polanowski, and one from Keith Martinez. “Paul was dazzling in doing all of the work on both of my goals”, said Tim. “Just Dazzling!”

“We had many more opportunities that we just couldn't convert”, said new Captain Pat Morin, who was handicapped in this game by wearing a complete set of borrowed equipment including ill-fitting skates. “We were a little sloppy and out of sync but I know these guys will get it together with a game or two under our belts.”

That sloppy play allowed the Bombers to even things up with 6:39 remaining in the third period before the Captain took matters in his own hands to put the Icemen back on top for good with 5:21 to play. “It's a testament to his skill level that he was able to overcome the weight of wearing Josh's jersey and Fluffy's skates”, said Polanowski.

After Dr. Bob turned away a flurry of close range shots to hold onto the lead, Sampson would score twice in the final minute to seal the victory. “Despite the rust, it was a very competitive and fun C-league game”, added Sampson. “It's amazing how that works out when you don't bring in ringers to friggin' C-league.”

Game Notes:
  • Keith Martinez picked up a goal and an assist in his return to the Icemen for the Summer.

  • Jay Burke and Rich Meyers both made their Icemen debut in this game. Jay is a solid blueliner who has the misfortune of working with John Bright and Rich is a teammate of both Patrick and Tim for the Wolfe Pack in Laurel.

  • With Brian McElwain taking over the line making duties, it was interesting to see Smitty, the king of the 15 second shift, moved to Line 3 RW thereby ensuring that McElwain will break the record for most ice time by a non-goalie in a season.

  • John Bright managed to finish an entire game with only Two penalties for checking.
  • Crowd Attendance: 1
